Which came first? The chicken.............

I've made up with the chickens.  They are off the sh-- list.

I've been wanting to do a little piece of chicken artwork for my kitchen.  My mother has a collection of hen on nest glass dishes.  Recently, she gave me a few.  Hen on nest covered dishes have been made by over 100 glass companies for over 150 years.  I've never collected them before, but since I have real chickens now, it seems to fit.

Here are the "hen on nests" that my mother gave to me.

And, today's work of art -

The Chickens are Back in Action!

Things are looking up again around here.  About a year ago, my husband got 3 chickens, Rhodey, Molly, and Zebra.  For months, they were laying the most beautiful eggs.  We had more eggs than we could ever consume so our family and friends had lots of "farm fresh" eggs.

However, a couple months ago the molting started.  Evidently, chickens "molt" in the fall, which means they lose their feathers and get new ones.  During this time it really takes a lot out of the poor little things.  Their eggs (when they were even laying them) were tall and thin.  I don't know about you, but I wasn't going to eat a skinny egg.  After some research on the computer, my husband found out that they need more calcium during the molting season, so he started supplementing their regular food.  And, TA DAH, beautiful eggs again.
