I've been playing around with Ranger Alcohol Inks again.  The colors are so vibrant and the possibilities are endless.  I just bought Cathy Taylor's book, Pigments of Your Imagination - Creating with Alcohol Inks.  It's very inspirational.

#6 and #7 of 29 Faces

Now, I admit this was a quickie while watching TV.  But it IS still a face.

Here's a 10 X 10 inch painting, using stencils, delusions ink, and collage for the background.  I used acrylic paints for the face.  The hair has a little molding paste to give it some texture.  I went a little nuts with the yellow hair.

Just Fooling Around

It was a hot, hot day in Florida.  A great day to stay inside.  I couldn't settle on one thing to work on, so I messed around with a few things.

First, I wanted to try out my Faber Castelle Gelatos again.  I watched a video on using them to make really pretty (and easy) backgrounds.  Basically, you just cover whatever you are using as a substrate (canvas, paper, cereal box, etc.) with gesso.  When the gesso is dry, color all over with different colors of Gelato.  Spritz with water, then brush the colors around.  I also tilted the paper in different directions to let the colors drip down the page.  Let it dry. Voila!

Next, I moved on to alcohol inks.  I had been wanting to paint a ceramic tile with alcohol ink for some time.  So, today was the day.  I used Tim Holtz Ranger Alcohol Ink in three colors - Stream, Citris, and Pool.  I just cleaned off the tile really good, then put a couple drops of the first color onto the felt pouncer thingy.  Then I just patted it around the tile.  When I had enough of the first color, I did the same thing with the second color, and the third.  I painted around the edges with a gold paint pen.  I finished up with a coat of glossy sealer.

                                                  

And then, while watching TV, I had to do some drawing that didn't require much thought, just repetition.

And finally, I subscribe to a blog, A Little Lime, by Helen Williams.  She is so talented.  She does Zentangle-inspired art.  This evening I received her most recent post.  She did a beautiful drawing of ribbons tied to a ring.  So I had to give it a shot.  Now, be kind - this was my first try and I only spent about 20 minutes on it.  I plan to do another one when I have more time.

All About Faces

I worked on my faces again today.  Several months ago, I downloaded a video by Julie Fei-Fan Balzer called All About Faces.  I had watched it before, but today I decided to actually DO the exercises.  I had purchased a couple of these little chipboard things at Michaels for $1.50.  It's 4 pieces of 5 X 5 inch chipboard, held together in the corner with a metal ring.




I gessoed each piece of chipboard, front and back.  The one in the photo, above, had decorative edges.  The one that I used for my faces had straight edges.

First she shows you how to draw the outline of a face and learn the different areas that are recessed and protruding and how to shade them accordingly.

Then we moved on to painting a face.  Basically  I drew the outline, painted the hair, then used 3 colors to shade the face.

She does this little tag exercise in the video.  I used a tag that I had decorated with alcohol inks, acrylic paint, and stencils.  I think this turned out really cute.

Girl Number 3

I'm on a roll.  I painted another girl on the back of a cereal box today.  Again, this one is very Kelly Rae Roberts-esque.  I tried another new technique.

I covered one of my rubber stamps in gel medium, instead of ink, then I stamped it on the surface.  I used water color to paint over it.  The gel medium acts as a resist to the water color.  It looked really good.  I wish that I had taken a picture of it right after I used the water color.  I ended up painting over it with acrylic paint because the dress needed to be more pronounced.  You can still see the stamp through the acrylic, but not as much as with the water color.  I want to try it again on something else.

Blowing Alcohol Inks

There are several videos on youtube about blowing on alcohol inks. So, I tried it and it is so easy, so fast, and so pretty. I made this one in about five minutes. I used glossy inkjet paper, Ranger inks, and a straw. You just drip the ink on the paper and blow.

Spring - When Everything Old is New Again!

Here's last night's art journal page.  I started out by painting some pink flowers with watercolor.  They make watercolor look so easy in the videos.  But no...........it is not easy!!  I decided to add some birds to hide some of my watercolor mess.  Then I kept adding and adding, and it just kept getting worse.

Never one to give up, I decided to start putting glitter on it - hey, what could it hurt?  Then, finally, I reached for the Dylusions spray inks and Liquid Pearls and figured it may not look like what I was going for, but at least it would be colorful.

Spring is a time for starting over.
