Citra Solv - You can actually use it for cleaning too!

I had never heard of Cita Solv prior to seeing a tutorial on Youtube.  There are so many articles and tutorials about using Citra Solv as a tool for creating some really beautiful art.

I had a hard time finding the right kind of Citra Solv at first.  I finally ordered it online.  I have spent hours pouring and brushing it on National Geographic magazines to alter the photos, turning them into beautiful papers that can be used for collage and other techniques.

A few days ago, I decided to tear my bedroom apart because I had seen 2 spiders and I thought a major cleaning might help.  Did I mention that I HATE spiders?  Anyway, behind my nightstand, I found some kind of disgusting, sticky mess - obviously the remains of something that I spilled a long time ago.  I tried the OxyClean spray, nothing.  I tried to scrape it off and it was so hard that it wouldn't budge.  I was going to go with the, majorly, toxic Goof Off next, but then - wait a minute - Citra Solv practically eats thru paper, maybe I should try it.  I barely touched it and it came right off.  That product is a miracle!  I went through my house like the white tornado.  The stuff smells great.

Who would have thought that you could actually use the product for it's original purpose.

Collage Couture

I've seen the work of several artists who do collages of women in pretty clothes made out of paper, fabric, flowers, little gems, etc.  So when I was in the bookstore the other day and saw Collage Couture: Techniques for Creating Fashionable Art, I had to get it.

It starts at the beginning teaching you how to sketch a fashion figure (you know, those tall, skinny figures that fashion designers draw for their creations).  Then she moves into drawing clothing, painting backgrounds, choosing colors and styles for clothes, then putting it all together into a piece of art.

The hardest thing for me was choosing the papers.  Then the only scissors that I could find were huge, which made it very difficult to cut out the body and dress.  Next time, I will make sure that I have some very small, very sharp, pointy scissors.

Here's my first attempt.  This was the first project in the book.  I made a couple changes.  She made her background by rubber stamping flowers and the word Vogue.  I didn't have a flower stamp that looked right, so I stenciled some leaves with a few small flowers.  I added a couple silver skeleton leaves.  I used bubble wrap to make the little white cirles and fine black marker to outline the stamped areas and add a couple more flowers.

Here's the most recent art journal page and some zentangling that I did while I was keeping my parents company in the hospital.  Actually, the girls face couldn't be consider zentangle - it's just doodling.

New Collage and Two Girls

My sister came to visit the other day.  She spent the night because her husband was doing a sleep study.  This gave us the opportunity to gossip and create some art.

She taught me how to draw cats and I taught her how to do gel transfers.  She's writing a children's book about a cat that finds a home.  My sister has always been able to paint.  A couple years ago, she gave  me a beautiful hat box that she had painted.

While we gabbed, I taught her about gel medium and she transferred a photocopy of an old map onto a canvas.  It turned out perfectly.

Here's the collage that I just finished.  I started out with two transfers on the blank canvas, then started layering on top.

Last night I did some doodling while watching "Girls" and "Enlightened" on TV.  I'd like to add these girls to a collage.

No Paint? Grab a Flower!

I have been so happy with my azalea bush.  My husband transplanted an azalea bush from a friend's yard, about 7 or 8 years ago.  It usually has a couple little blooms in February each year.  But this year it's in full bloom.  I should say that it WAS in full bloom.

A couple nights ago, the temperature went down to 28 degrees.  The next morning all of the blooms were shrunken and limp.  It was really disappointing.  I decided to pull off all of the dead blossoms when I noticed that my fingers were turning pink from the flowers and I couldn't rub it off.

The light bulb went off in my head and I went running for some water color paper.  I placed a few limp blossoms on the paper and sort of pushed them around with a sponge brush.  The flowers leaked a beautiful pinkish/purple liquid onto the paper.  It looked just like ink.  I kept squishing it around and I think the paper will make a pretty background for a collage, water color, or some other type of mixed media.

I'll post the finished project when I decide how I'm going to use this homemade, flower-ink, background.

Poor, limp azaleas!

Squish the flowers around.

Not bad, no paint, just flower "ink"!
