Mixed-Media Dancing Girl

I do a lot of faces, but I've always been afraid of whole bodies.  Well, not anymore.  I threw caution to the wind and painted this dancing girl.  I have to admit, I'm pretty pleased with myself.

Yes, I know that I cheated with the long dress.....but, she does have bare arms.

I figured the safest way to go with my first whole person, was to create a very textured and colorful background, using that for the dress and hair.  It was a confidence builder.  Soon, I'll venture into, completely, painting the clothes too.

Pair of Mixed-Media Collage Houses

I became inspired by the "Wintery Town" piece that I created for the DecoArt Media Winter Wonderland Challenge.  So, I worked on a couple more.

As I've mentioned in the past, I have lots and lots of painted papers.  They make great little houses and roofs.  Sometimes, I use the original papers.  However, this time, I made copies of the originals. As long as they are good quality copies, they work wonderfully.

I started with a black, gessoed background, sprayed some alcohol ink thru stencils, added some additional stencilling with gesso and acrylic paint.  I love the way the ink bleeds thru the gesso, creating beautiful colors.  Then I just adhered the papers with matte medium, doodled and stamped around and we're finished.

My camera never, really, captures the true colors.  They are, actually, brighter and cheerier.

Six Degrees of Separation

I have always been intrigued by the theory of "Six Degrees of Separation".  Yes, it was a movie, but even before that I was aware of the idea.


According to Wikipedia, it goes like this:

Six degrees of separation is the theory that everyone and everything is six or fewer steps away, by way of introduction, from any other person in the world, so that a chain of "a friend of a friend" statements can be made to connect any two people in a maximum of six steps. It was originally set out by Frigyes Karinthy in 1929 and popularized by a 1990 play written by John Guare.

The game "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon"^[22] was invented as a play on the concept: the goal is to link any actor to Kevin Bacon through no more than six connections, where two actors are connected if they have appeared in a movie or commercial together. It was created by three students at Albright College in Pennsylvania,^[23] who came up with the concept while watching Footloose. On September 13, 2012, Google made it possible to search for any given actor's 'Bacon Number' through their search engine.

Of course, the internet has made this concept easier, but I prefer to only count actual, physical, contact to qualify as a "degree".

So.......while driving down the road a few weeks ago, I started thinking about it and decided to create a piece of art.  I had this, kind of wack piece that had been sitting around for a few months.  I stamped the circles and hearts on tracing paper, then cut them out and attached them to the canvas with Golden's Matte Medium.  I carved the circle stamps out of rubber several years ago, but never used them. (you just never know when you might find a use for something).  I used a paint pen to draw the lines.  You know how I like to add words to everything, so I was going to put "Six Degrees" on it somewhere, then changed my mind.  People will just have to figure it out for themselves.

By the way, I am two degrees from Elvis Presley,two degrees from Madonna, three degrees from President Obama, three degrees from the Dalai Llama, and three degrees from Kevin Bacon.

You may be thinking....."Wow, Cyndi must have a lot of time on her hands".....and you would be right!

Blue Beatrice Painting Step by Step

I wanted to paint something a couple days ago, but I didn't have any ideas. So, since I haven't played with my Molding Paste (Golden) in a while, I laid some mesh and a stencil on the canvas and pushed the paste thru with a pallet knife. I forgot to take a picture of this step.  It takes about 24 hours to completely dry. I let it dry overnight.

Still, a day later, I didn't have any firm concept, so I just started by slapping some blue and white paint on a 12" X 12" canvas. I started dripping, thinned, fluid acrylic and airbrush paint along the top of the canvas, just letting it go wherever it wanted.

I've been organizing my art supplies recently and have come across many, many things that I haven't seen in over a year. I have a rubber stamp by Pam Carriker (I love her art).  The stamp was 4" X 3", so I made a copy, enlarged it, cut a rough stencil out of cardstock and sponge the paint thru.

I can't stay away from the dots, lines and circles so, of course, I added them using the top of a small plastic container, a stamp that I cut out of an eraser, and stencil with dots.

I cut a, sort of, starburst stencil out of cardstock and added the rays with Golden Quinacridone Azo Gold.  I went back with some black gesso and re-painted the face.

Some New Stuff!

I haven't posted in a while and I have worked on a few new things.

This collage is actually my first item for sale on Etsy.  I have made every excuse in the book to put off listing my art for sale.  Fear of rejection, I guess.  I finally said "to heck with it" and listed a  few things last night.

I went a little "flower crazy" with this collage.  Lots of handmade stamps and stencils.

I made the next two collage on cardstock, using book pages, stamps, washi tape, and pastels.

Look at My Tote Bag

I really like Zazzle.  I discovered the site a couple years ago.  There are other similar businesses on the web, but I've used Zazzle and haven't been disappointed.

I would like to put some of my art on greeting cards, coffee cups, tote bags, etc.  So, I uploaded a piece to Zazzle and ordered a tote bag and a card to see how they would look.  I'm pleased, considering that I photographed the art journal page with my iPad.  If I actually decide to try to sell something, I will photograph my art using more professional equipment (better lighting, better camera, etc.)

I ordered the extra large bag, so it makes the picture look like of small.  It would probably look better on the regular sized tote bag.

This is a drawing that I did while watching "Dance Moms" last night.  I think this would look really cute on a coffee cup or dishes.  I think I'll order a coffee mug from Zazzle to check it out.
