Creative Heart Monday - Two Gel Print Paintings

Happy Creative Heart Monday!!

Today, I'm working on a couple small pieces that I'm making for a little (very little) arts market thing that I'm doing next Saturday.  In an effort to build some inventory, I'm doing two pieces at the same time in this video.

Mixed Media Textured Heart

I saw someone using poultry grit the other day on a canvas.  So.....I have chickens.....I have poultry grit.....I must do this too.

If you don't have poultry grit in your art supply arsenel, that's alright.  Just build a chicken coop in your backyard.....purchase 3 or 4 chickens.....wait 6 months and you will need poultry grit to add to their chicken feed.

OR

go to a seed and feed store and buy a bag.  (actually, you could, probably use very small aquarium gravel)

This is a very quick project,  Waiting for the molding paste to dry takes the most time.

I covered a 5" X 5" canvas with Golden Molding Paste, using a pallet knife.

Then, painted the piece with various pinks and purples.  Added stenciling with Donna Downey Mini Numbers stencil.

Here comes the Poultry Grit......

I applied molding paste in the shape of a heart, sprinkled on the grit, making sure to cover all of the molding paste.  Let it sit for a few minutes, then tap gently to remove excess grit.

I let the grit and molding paste harden overnight, then painted it black.

Then, sponged on red and magenta paint, so that the black was still visible.  I added black charcoal pencil around the edges.  Then sprayed with a fixitive to seal in the charcoal pencil.

I will spray the entire piece with a glossy sealer.  I haven't done that yet.

So, that's it.....my chicken grit heart!  I plan to use this chicken grit on a larger project.  I'm envisioning all of the possibilities.

Maybe next time I'll try mealworms......just kidding.

My First Art Tutorial Video

I, finally, did it!  I've been wanting to make an art video for years........and I did it.

I am not the most computer savvy person when it come to videos, editing, etc.  My dear husband modified a tripod for me so that I could shoot straight down.  None of my digital cameras worked so I used my Iphone 6.  Most of the video is upside down because I can't figure out which way the camera is supposed to go.  But, I managed to shoot it anyway.

Our, good friend, Roberto Vally, made an album last year (I think), called "Boom. Boom, Boom". He was gracious enough to let me use one of his songs, "Latin Lounge".  I think it went perfectly with the time lapse portion.  I plan to use more of his music in future videos.

To be honest, I'm not that thrilled with the piece of art in the video.  I was obsessing over the filming so much that I kind of dropped the ball on the art.  I'll do better next time....I promise.

Another "Love" Painting

Yeah, yeah, yeah.....I know......another heart.....another touching sentiment, but I can't help myself.  I found this heart stencil buried in a pile of stencils that I haven't used in a while and just had to do something with it.

I watched Shawn Petite's Sunday Inspiration and I loved her background, so I wanted to give it a try. First, I painted an 8"X 8" wooden panel with black Liquitex paint.

Then, using an old gift card, I dragged white paint, randomly across the piece.

Next, I used Golden Matte Medium to adhere various book pages, sheet music, and number stickers.

Using the gift card again, I dragged blue craft paint across and dried it with the heat gun,

After the blue, I forgot to keep taking pictures, but this is what I did:

• dragged green paint across
• dried with heat gun
• dragged off white paint across
• dried with heat gun
• painted entire piece with raw umber
• wiped most of umber paint off with a wet wipe, creating an aged look.
• Mixed a tiny bit of black into the raw umber paint and stenciled the heart
• Dried it.
• Painted over the stenciled heart with Quinacridone Magenta and Quinacridone Red.
• Dried it.
• Brushed DecoArt Media Crackle Glaze over the heart.
• Let it dry naturally, creating a crackle effect.
• Stamped words on book pages, cut them out, rubbed edges with Ranger Archival Ink pad.
• Adhered words with Matte Medium
• Used charcoal pencil to outline and shade the heart, words, and edges of canvas.

This is the first time that I've ever used the DecoArt Media Crackle Glaze.  I loved it!  I think that I will be crackling a great deal in the future.  Here's a close up.

So, remember "a loving heart is the truest wisdom"!!!!!

More Hearts

I'm in a very Valentinesy mood, as far as my art goes. I played around with some more hearts.

This one is kind of weird.  I wanted to try this heart pattern.  Then I decided that I wanted to try some old paper, so this is what I ended up with.

Valentine Doodling and a Crocheted Blanket

I've been doodling around with these hearts for a couple days.  That was a lot of hearts to color.  I used Sharpies.  I cut the angels out of a French school book, then attached them to the page with a glue stick.

My anniversary is Valentines Day.  It will be 24 years.  It's gone by so fast.  When I look at pictures of us in the 90's, it's hard to believe how much we have changed.

I just took this blanket out of the dryer and decided to take a picture of it.  This is, probably, my favorite thing that I have crocheted.  It's 100% cotton.  It feels so heavy and soft.  I love the texture.  I used single and double crochet stitches.  It's great when things turn out the way you wanted.  It's also great when I actually finish a crochet project.  I have plastic containers full of semi-complete afghans, bathing suits, sweaters, shrugs, socks.  You name it - I have it, partially crocheted!
